Loyalsock Township School District takes
team approach to cleaning
A cleaning program initiated by Susquehanna
Paper & Sanitary Supply and Pro-Team, Inc., Pro-Team's Team
Cleaning System has garnered exceptional results for the Loyalsock
Township School District.
Team Cleaning is a flexible, cost-effective cleaning
system designed to increase custodial operations efficiency. Structured
to allow better deployment of labor, facilitate better cleaning
methods, and simplify custodial training programs, Team Cleaning
involves breaking down custodial duties into four categories, or
functions:
> Light-Duty Function (dusting, emptying trash,
spot cleaning, etc.)
> Vacuum Function (vacuuming carpets and hard floors)
> Restroom Function (cleaning, sanitizing, and restocking restrooms)
> Utility Function (cleaning lobbies, spot-cleaning glass, mopping
and scrubbing floors, etc.).
By working Team Cleaning into its facility management
program, Loyalsock Township School District was able to improve
its supervisory program, standardize its training routine, and take
custodial staff morale to a new level.
Because Team Cleaning involves clearly defined
job responsibilities, supervising Team Cleaning is extremely time-efficient.
In a traditional "zone-cleaned" building, a different
person cleans each floor or area, and a supervisor must inspect
each area to determine overall quality. However, since Team Cleaning
is an "assembly line" process, Loyalsock custodial supervisors
can now spot-check a few building areas and quickly assess overall
cleaning quality.
A key element of Team Cleaning training is standardization-performing
specific tasks in specific ways with specific tools and materials.
Team Cleaning also involves cross training for the purpose of providing
backup when a team member is absent. To train a new member of the
Loyalsock Team Cleaning crew, a supervisor must demonstrate only
one set of specific tasks.
Team Cleaning succeeds because it clearly
defines goals, keeps custodians in the know, and encourages input
and clear communication. Input from workers allows refining of the
Team Cleaning program, and Team Cleaning's assembly line process
allocates work fairly and increases accountabilityall of which
boosts employee morale and builds team spirit.
